Genomics Education and HREC

About Human Research Ethics Committees:

Any research involving humans must first obtain ethics approval from a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). The ethical considerations of a research study may differ based on the study type and methodology. Genetics and genomics research in particular carries many unique ethical considerations due to its shared, but also very personal and unique nature. However, previous research has shown Australian HREC members have suboptimal genomic knowledge and poor confidence in reviewing genomics ethics applications.

About the study:

This project strives to increase HREC genomic knowledge and confidence when reviewing genomics ethics applications through:

  • Developing a suite of online educational resources designed for Australian HRECs that address the scientific and ethical considerations of genomics research

  • Evaluating the efficacy, acceptability, and perceived utility of these resources
