PRS Accreditation

About laboratory accreditation:

There is a lack of guidance in how best to calculate a polygenic risk (PGS) for clinical use in Australia. The lack of guidelines means there is variation in how different laboratories approach their risk calculations. Healthcare providers and regulatory bodies also have limited guidelines to help them evaluate PGS and compare results between different laboratories.

About this study:

The project aims to identify and address barriers in developing and accrediting clinical PGS in Australian diagnostic laboratories by:

  • Identifying essential requirements for introducing PGS testing in the Australian health system, with a specific focus on accredited testing in diagnostic laboratories.

  • Establishing technical standards and national guidelines for PGS analysis and reporting.

  • Providing laboratories with quality assessment tools and resources for the development of clinically accredited PGS tests.
